The First Commandment – More Principles Regarding Idolatry

This is my seventh post on the Ten Commandments using Buddy Dano’s study: FOR THE LAND OF THE FREE: THE TEN COMMANDMENTS OF FREEDOM and the final one dealing with the first commandment. In this installment I will list the last five of pastor Dano’s nine principles regarding idolatry and why it is destructive to any society.

I have been giving a lot of thought to the topic of idolatry. Most people who have attended church for very long should have heard their pastor discuss how idolatry can take many forms. I believe that idolatry can indeed take many forms, mankind was made to worship and we all will worship something. If we don’t worship the true God then we will worship something else which is idolatry.

I did some searching on the topic of idolatry and found the article “The Glory of God and Idolatry” by Bob Deffinbaugh which captured the concept of idolatry in the broad sense that I was looking for. This quote is excellent:

Second, we should see that idolatry is an offense against the glory of God. It is so obvious with the Israelites at Mount Sinai. They worshiped a golden idol (and not a very glorious one, I have suggested) while the glory of God was displayed on Mount Sinai, in the sight of all (Exodus 24:17). Idolatry is seeking glory in something other than God. Idolatry finds God insufficient and inadequate. Idolatry insists that there must be something better than God. Whatever we value more than God is an idol, and thus the attention we give it is the practice of idolatry. This may be different things for different people, but I believe that we all have our idols, the things we turn to before we turn to God, the things we turn to instead of God.

Of course nations that are full of idolatry can survive for many centuries but they won’t survive in freedom. It is sad that we in the United States are moving away from the principles that made us a free and vigorous nation!

Zechariah 10:2, ‘‘For the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because there was no shepherd.’’


1 Corinthians 10:19-21, ‘‘What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.’’


The fear psychosis of idolatry is declared in Jeremiah 50:38. ‘‘A drought is upon her waters; and they shall be dried up: for it is the land of graven images, and they are mad upon their idols.’’


It separates Right-Man from Right-Woman, as it did with Jeremiah. Jeremiah’s Right-Woman was in soul slavery, while Jeremiah had a free soul. Therefore God commanded him to forget about her and to have nothing more to do with her. She had gone to the Baal sanctuaries and had involved herself in indiscriminate sex acts, which are a part of the Phallic cult.

Ezekiel 22:3-19, ‘‘Then say thou, Thus saith the Lord God, The city sheddeth blood in the midst of it, that her time may come, and maketh idols against herself to defile herself. Thou art become guilty in thy blood that thou hast shed; and hast defiled thyself in thine idols which thou hast made; and thou hast caused thy days to draw near, and art come even unto thy years: therefore have I made thee a reproach unto the heathen, and a mocking to all countries.

‘‘Those that be near, and those that be far from thee, shall mock thee, which art infamous and much vexed. Behold, the princes of Israel, every one were in thee to their power to shed blood. In thee have they set light by father and mother: in the midst of thee have they dealt by oppression with the stranger: in thee have they vexed the fatherless and the widow. Thou hast despised Mine holy things, and hast profaned My sabbaths. In thee are men that carry tales to shed blood: and in thee they eat upon the mountains: in the midst of thee they commit lewdness. In thee have they discovered their fathers’ nakedness: in thee have they humbled her that was set apart for pollution. And one hath committed abomination with his neighbor’s wife; and another hath lewdly defiled his daughter in law; and another in thee hath humbled his sister, his father’s daughter.

‘‘In thee have they taken gifts to shed blood; thou hast taken usury and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbors by extortion, and hast forgotten Me, saith the Lord God. Behold, therefore I have smitten Mine hand at thy dishonest gain which thou hast made, and at thy blood which hath been in the midst of thee. Can thine heart endure, or can thine hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with thee? I the Lord have spoken it, and will do it. And I will scatter thee among the heathen, and disperse thee in the countries, and will consume thy filthiness out of thee. And thou shalt take thine inheritance in thyself in the sight of the heathen, and thou shalt know that I am the Lord. And the Word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Son of man, the house of Israel is to me become dross: all they are brass, and tin, and iron, and lead, in the midst of the furnace; they are even the dross of silver. Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Because ye are all become dross, behold, therefore I will gather you into the midst of Jerusalem.’’

Ezekiel 23:37-49, ‘‘That they have committed adultery, and blood is in their hands, and with their idols have they committed adultery, and have also caused their sons, whom they bare unto me, to pass for them through the fire, to devour them.

‘‘Moreover this they have done unto Me: they have defiled My sanctuary in the same day, and have profaned My sabbaths. For when they had slain their children to their idols, then they came the same day into my sanctuary to profane it; and, lo, thus have they done in the midst of Mine house. And furthermore, that ye have sent for men to come from far, unto whom a messenger was sent; and, lo, they came: for whom thou didst wash thyself, paintedst thy eyes, and deckedst thyself with ornaments, And satest upon a stately bed, and a table prepared before it, whereupon thou hast set Mine incense and Mine oil.

‘‘And a voice of a multitude being at ease was with her: and with the men of the common sort were brought Sabeans from the wilderness, which put bracelets upon their hands, and beautiful crowns upon their heads. Then said I unto her that was old in adulteries, Will they now commit whoredoms with her, and she with them? Yet they went in unto her, as they go in unto a woman that playeth the harlot: so went they in unto Aholah and unto Aholibah, the lewd women.

‘‘And the righteous men, they shall judge them after the manner of adulteresses, and after the manner of women that shed blood; because they are adulteresses, and blood is in their hands. For thus saith the Lord God; I will bring up a company upon them, and will give them to be removed and spoiled. And the company shall stone them with stones, and dispatch them with their swords; they shall slay their sons and their daughters, and burn up their houses with fire. Thus will I cause lewdness to cease out of the land, that all women may be taught not to do after your lewdness. And they shall recompense your lewdness upon you, and ye shall bear the sins of your idols: and ye shall know that I am the Lord God.’’

And many passages in Jeremiah. Also 1 Corinthians 6:9, ‘‘Knew ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind.’’


Isaiah 2:8, 18-20, ‘‘Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made.’’ ‘‘And the idols he shall utterly abolish. And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the Earth, for fear of the Lord, and for the glory of His majesty, when He ariseth to shake terribly the Earth. In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats.’’

Isaiah 21:9, 36:18-20, ‘‘And, behold, here cometh a chariot of men, with a couple of horsemen. And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground.’’ ‘‘Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The Lord will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered His land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? Where are the gods of Hammath and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’’

Isaiah 37:12-19, ‘‘Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Telassar? Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the Lord, and spread it before the Lord. And Hezekiah prayed unto the Lord, saying, O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, Thou art the God, even Thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the Earth: Thou hast made Heaven and Earth. Incline Thine ear, O Lord and hear; open Thine eyes, O Lord, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God. Of a truth, Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries. And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.’’

Jeremiah 2:27-30, ‘‘Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto Me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us. But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah. Wherefore will ye plead with Me? ye all have transgressed against Me, saith the Lord. In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.’’

Jeremiah 3:6-11, ‘‘The Lord said also unto me in the days of Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the harlot. And I said after she had done all these things, Turn thou unto Me. But she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it. And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also. And it came to pass through the lightness of her whoredom, that she defiled the land, and committed adultery with stones and with stocks. And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah hath not turned unto Me with her whole heart, but feignedly, saith the Lord. And the Lord said unto me, The backsliding Israel hath justified herself more than treacherous Judah.’’

Jeremiah 7:17-20, ‘‘Be not a terror unto me: thou art my hope in the day of evil. Let them be confounded that persecute me, but let not me be confounded: let them be dismayed, but let not me be dismayed: bring upon them the day of evil, and destroy them with double destruction. Thus saith the Lord unto me; Go and stand in the gate of the children of the people, whereby the kings of Judah come in, and by the which they go out, and in all the gates of Jerusalem; And say unto them, Hear ye the Word of the Lord, ye kings of Judah, and all Judah, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, that enter in by these gates.’’

Ezekiel 6:4-6, ‘‘And your altars shall be desolate, and your images shall be broken: and I will cast down your slain men before your idols. and I will lay the dead carcasses of the children of Israel before their idols; and I will scatter your bones round about your altars. In all your dwellingplaces the cities shall be laid waste, and the high places shall be desolate; that your altars may be laid waste and made desolate, and your idols may be broken and cease, and your images may be cut down, and your works may be abolished.’’

Freedom of the soul is lost first. Then follows the loss of the freedom of the body.


The unbeliever hears the Gospel and rejects Jesus Christ as personal Saviour. The believer hears the Word of God, but rejects God’s provision for him in time. In both cases calluses begin to form on the soul and a vacuum is formed into which false doctrine is drawn. The result is emotional rebellion in the soul and soul slavery. The Phallic cult is just one overt expressions of this.

Negative volition develops toward Right-Man, Right-Woman. God has designed one Right-Man for one Right-Woman. And the relationship was designed to bring great happiness. The soul in slavery has moved ‘‘beyond God’’ and is therefore not interested in God’s design for Right-Man, Right-Woman.

This was the case with Jeremiah’s Right-Woman. She rejected Jeremiah and went into the mountain to the palaces beneath the green trees where in the name of Baal, she and many others practiced all kinds of sex perversions. She rejected Category 1 love as well as Category 2 love, therefore she rejected the only man who could fulfill her. On the other side of Category 1 and Category 2 love there is nothing. Therefore, in her futile search for happiness, she tried to fill this ‘‘nothingness’’ with dope, drinks, and all manner of sublimation in order to stand up under the group sex and other perverted practices.

When you walk out ‘‘beyond the Lord,’’ you may be walking out on your Right-Man or Right-Woman, your right church, your right country, every thing, even your right money, and your right material things, into ‘‘nothingness’’ and self induced misery.
